According to IL ornithologist Vern Kleen: I may be wrong, but during the nearly 40 years I prepared the annual breeding season reports of Illinois' birds, I don't recall any records of breeding Golden-winged Warblers. However, there was one "confirmed" record in southern Cook County for the BBS project. For what it's worth, I do remember one "Lawrence's" Warbler "on territory" for two or three years in the Chicago area several years ago which may have some implications on breeding Golden-wingeds in the area. According to Doug Stotz (Chicago Field Museum): I don't believe there is any evidence that the golden warbler currently nests in Illinois. I think you'll find that there isn't any clear evidence of nesting in the last 20 years. The disappearance of Golden-winged as a breeder probably is worth documenting for purposes of evaluating its status federally.
