I fully support this effort to establish an experimental nonessential population of Nicrophorus americanus in Southwestern Missouri. I have been involved with the recovery of this species since 1994 in our attempt here in the eastern portion of the species range to reintroduce it to Nantucket Island MA. We to date have shown great progress and positive results in this initiative. The recovery goal states 5 (self sustaining) introduced populations within its range in 20 years. I feel this site is ideal for establishing a population within the western portion of its range.
I currently act as the American burying beetle Species Coordinator for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). The ABB is the first insect to be given this status. I know many of the partners that will be involved in this initiative and feel confident that this initiative will be carried out and followed through by some very dedicated and passionate conservationists, field biologists, and zoologists.
