The American Burying Beetle is a unique and relatively charismatic insect species that fills an important ecological niche. The return of this species to Missouri prairies is highly desireable, because it will serve both as a functional part of the natural community and as an educational tool that will enhance interest in the preservation of other endangered species and ecosystems. This restoration project is the culmination of many years of study and work to culture the species. Restoration of the beetle in the wild will justify the substantial investment that has been made in captive propagation at the St. Louis Zoo. I support this project enthusiastically.
