To whom it may concern, A group and I recently did a research topic on the Altamaha Spinymussel scientific name is Elliptio spinosa Lea and had a previously used scientific name Canthyria spinosa. (Johnson, 1970) The Altamaha Spinymussel are typically found buried in sandbars with swift water current and found most often in very coarse to fine sand. The spinymussel was found to have very restricted habitat preferences and might be most affected by siltation. The mussel is sometimes found in the sloughs that occasionally form between and exposed sandbar and the bank. The Altamaha spinymussel is restricted to the Altamaha River basin. The upstream extent of its range is near the confluence of House Creek with the Ocmulgee River, in Ben County Ga. The Altamaha spinymussel has been found at several sites in the lower Ohoopee River. Despite intensive survey efforts since 2000, few Altamaha spinymussel have been found at very few locations. As a result, it appears that this species is declining rapidly throughout the basin and may be extirpated form the Oconee River. The Altamaha spinymussel is on assualt on multiply fronts and deserve the right to be protected. Georgia has lost so many native mussels it can not afford to lose anymore! Please protect this animal for the many more generation to come!
