At the request of the FWS Mississippi Field Office, I have reviewed the Federal Register article of 22June10 proposing the reclassification of Tulotoma magnifica. The article was such an extensive and relentless catalog of good news that I became exhausted in the reading of it.
Factually the report itself seemed very thorough and accurate. I myself have not been directly involved in Tulotoma research, nor do I have any significant field experience or other connections with Alabama. But as an outsider, I am not aware of any “relevant data,” “additional information,” or “planned activities” impacting the snail that the Service has missed. The only criticism I would offer of the entire 22June10 article would be that our good friend Bob Hershler’s name is misspelled in the Background section, and the list of references I was sent separately seems to have been incomplete (missing 2008 references from Garner, Johnson, and DeVries that I noticed, and USDOI 2007).
In every significant detail, however, the Service is to be commended for a job well done. Not only has the FWS preserved this small but potentially important component of biodiversity, it seems to be thriving. The proposed reclassification of Tulotoma from endangered to threatened status is well justified.
