This designation of critical habitat is warranted in light of the small distribution and population size of this frog which is found nowhere else on earth. Wetland habitats in northern Puerto Rico have been developed to the point where each is precious. By preserving habitat for this coqui, many other species will benefit. Loss of the Sagittaria species on which it depends for egg deposition will occur if the wetland is developed by draining for housing.
