I support the designation of the Harlequin butterfly (Atlantea tulita) as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
Atlantea tulita is an endemic species limited to a small costal area of northern Puerto Rico, specifically the municipality of Quebradillas. That area is characterized by karts geology, dramatic cliffs and a truly unique flora.
The host plan (Oplonia spinosa) occurs in many places around Puerto Rico, but only in Quebradillas it supports the Harlequin butterfly. That shows without doubt that this butterfly is an extremely sensitive and specialized organism that requires protection for its survival.
