We at Biscayne National Park do not have a rigid bird monitoring protocol in place (due to lack of staff), however, we do conduct occasional bird surveys as the opportunity arises. After reviewiing all of our bird sighting reports and databases, which go back to 1972 up through the present, we have only one report of a black-capped petrel observed in park boundaries. The sighting occurred on May 22, 2007 on Elliott Key.
It is important to note that the observer is not a park employee and the sighting was not confirmed by park staff. The observer also indicated uncertainty, stating that that this was a "probable" black-capped petrel. Therefore we can not say with certainty if the observed bird was, in fact, a black-capped petrel.
