Copperhead “Cave” is one of the main known hibernacula for that Northern Long-Eared bats, at least in the Midwest. In addition, Building 121C at the quickly closing US Army Newport Chemical Depot is a summer roost for about 100 bats of this species. Also, Indiana State University has found that at least some of the bats at Building 121C hibernate at Copperhead Cave.
This species in hibernation is difficult to find (because they hibernate mostly in cracks), and also they seldom form maternity colonies in buildings, this is a very unique situation.
Copperhead Cave seems safe at least for now. It is requested that support be given to have Building 121C at the US Army Newport Chemical Dept preserved for the bats before the deed is transfered to new property owners.
