The prairie dog is a KEYSTONE SPECIES, meaning a species whose very presence
contributes to a diversity of life and whose extinction would consequently lead
to the extinction of other forms of life. Keystone species help to support the
ecosystem (entire community of life) of which they are a part.
We know that upwards of 140 species of wildlife are either closely associated
with prairie dogs or benefit from prairie dogs and the habitat they create,
including the endangered black-footed ferret, bald and golden eagles, swift
foxes, coyotes, ferruginous hawks, burrowing owls, and badgers.
Please seriously consider the black-tailed prairie dog for the Endangered
Species list.
Thank you.
