I live in South Dakota and see the Praire Dog as a threat to ranch land. However, the Prairie Dog does have limited domain limited to the northern plain states. The Prairie Dog population does cover the huge geography it once covered. We must look beyond the Priaire Dog towns and what other species of birds and animals are also dependent on the Prairie Dog for food. The Prairie Dog has a place in our ecology but also must have some control so it does not destory thousands of acres of grazing land. The Prairie Dog should should be shared with the other states where it once lived. The Prairie Dog population should be spread out as part of the management procedure. I agree we we do not want the Prairie Dog to become extinct but there are means to manage the Prairie Dog so it does not reproduce out of control. With over population the Prairie Dog is suseptible to disease outbreaks that destroy populations. Population management is important along with maintaining a Prairie Dog populaiton. In summary Prairie Dogs should be protected but also need to be managed to prevent over population.
