RE: Support of FSB Extension on Saxman Final Ruling
ATTN: Theo Matuskowitiz
This is a follow up to the letter from Sealaska dated December 13, 2011 in which we encouraged the Federal Subsistence Board to reverse the 2007 decision and keep Saxman rural for the purposes of federal subsistence management. Sealaska once again sends its support to the Federal Subsistence Board for continued review of this matter, and appreciates the extension the final ruling date.
Subsistence is critical for the small Native village of Saxman. The Alaska Native value of Haa Aani, or Our Land, is observed through the relationship of the First People of the Tongass to our lands and its resources. We believe an extension of the compliance date of the 2007 final rule will allow for improved regulation and management, for the benefit of all.
We once again state our support for the actions of the Federal Subsistence Board to review the rural/non-rural determination process and delay the action once made in 2007 concerning Saxman.
Sincerely,
Albert Kookesh, Board Chair
SEALASKA CORPORATION
