From living year round at Eagle Lake since the early 1980s, I have seen many people come to the lake expecting certain things and complaining when their expectations are not realized. They often do NOT observe the flora and fauna around the area to make logical decisions. Let me give some facts. Eagle Lake has many animal species that eat Eagle Lake trout and change the habitat of the water environment. One example is the pelicans, swarms and swarms of pelicans herding fish to eat all around the lake-must be giving the fish heart attacks, lots of stress. From my understanding, one pelican eats about 4 pounds of fish each day. Hundreds of years ago the pelicans were managed by Native tribes; they collected the eggs leaving one egg in the nest. You see the Tribal people liked fish too. Then we have the problem (this has been watched by locals) of the government run fisheries missing the water and dumping the little/new fish on the cement of the dock. Another issue some visitors and summer people bring up is the water level. Eagle Lake came up much higher after snow before the juniper trees invaded the northern areas of the lake, especially the Highway 139 side. The trees drink up the water before it reaches the lake. I have not seen waterfalls in years on the Hwy.139 side in the spring. I know the junipers greatly change the water entering in the lake because the cutting of trees of private property on the west side of the lake caused springs to come back.
