“The Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout should be listed as an Endangered or Threatened Species. There are a few factors that these specific trout possess that make them in dire need for protection. The first being that the trout are endemic to Eagle Lake and therefore cannot survive in other locations naturally without the assistance of humans in hatcheries. Secondly, reduced stream flow and increased alkalinity of the lake from logging and livestock grazing are the spawning cycle of the trout. Another factor is that the Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout numbers are being decreased by the non-native Brook Trout outcompeting the Rainbow Trout. The hatcheries also proposed problems due to the genetic inbreeding of the species and the diseases that can build up with the large number of fish in an enclosed area. The most shocking thing about these trout is that there are vastly more trout in human controlled hatcheries then there are in the wild. The low rate of survival in the wild should be a clear indicator that this specie should be enlisted.”
