Please consider the hellbender as a candidate for federal protection. Some states provide little if any protection for the hellbender, such as W.V. The hellbender is a micro habitat specialists and the range is very restricted. Habitat is at risk from environmental issues. Hellbenders are being surveyed for local abundance, distribution, density and health status. Animals are being micro chipped, allowing further protection if the animals are protected by federal law. Known meta populations of hellbenders are found in chytrid infected waters which put the aniamls at futher risk. Please add this animal to the list for federal protection.
