Please consider the following changes to the proposed framework for 2008-09 late
Migratory Canada Goose Season:
*Consider all of Virginia predominantly effected by the Southern James Bay
Population and allow a season with similar recomendations (i.e. longer season
and higher bag limit).
*Expand the Bag limit from 2 per day to at least 3 per day for all or part of the
season in the Atlantic Population (Eastern) Zone in Virginia.
*Allow the counties divided by zone boundary (Interstate 95 and Rt. 460) to select
the most liberal season for the entire county.
*Extend the season in the Eastern Zone into February and March when the most
crop damage is done in Virginia.
Any of the of the above or combinations thereof will provide relief to our small grain
(barley, wheat, etc.) producers from the damage sustained by Canada Goose
populations. Expanded seasons or more timely seasons will allow for hunting
when these grain crops are most vulnerable Nov. to March. Virginia has nearly
7500 grain producers in the Atlantic Population zone that suffer from crop damage
each and every year. Many have to resort to Kill Permits to minimally protect
their
crops.
Please make these changes now. Eventhough mating pairs are slightly down we
understand the the hatch is good and the population will be up and therefore crop
damage will be up.
I appreciate the opportunity to provide comments.
