The conference lodging allowance reimbursement option in the Federal Travel Regulation should be removed promptly. Allowing federal employees to exceed the maximum lodging per diem rate by 25% is reckless. Federal spending needs to be restrained, especially spending on travel. The 2010 lavish Las Vegas conference brought excessive government spending to the attention of many Americans. Over $800, 000 was spent on a four-day conference at the M Resort Spa and Casino. Excessive government spending on travel is taking advantage of tax payer’s dollars. The grand amount of money that is being spent on government travel could go towards bigger issues like education or poverty. Removing the conference lodging allowance is a needed step towards reining in travel budgets. More regulations like this one need to be proposed and implemented.
