While I believe CER is a excellent idea, I have some concerns about validity of results in studies.
A recent study funded by NIH and done at Rush Medical School looked at decreasing osteoarthritis pain of the medial knee by using a valgus wedge on an orthotic. The conclusion was that it was effective. I believe their results were valid but no consideration was given to the valgus wedge's effect on the hip, ankle, or subtalar joint. All these joints will develop early osteoarthritis caused by the change in motion created by the valgus wedge. Using a study like this to recommend treatment may cause other problems.
My point is that studies do not always tell the whole story.
