Dear Secretary Sebelius,
As a health care consumer, I am concerned that medical loss ratio regulations published by your office may impact me and millions of others.
In order to stay within the limits set by the regulations, insurance companies are slashing commissions to agents and brokers. Since my agent has helped me through the years find the best insurance plan and the best price, I'm afraid that I will not get this kind of help if my agent is forced to leave the business.
Who is going to replace the services and expertise offered by agents, government call centers or customer service agents? No thanks. My agent is available to me at all hours to help with a claim, answer any questions I may have, and to help me shop around. He/she is far too valuable to be replaced by a state agency.
If the health reform law was supposed to help consumers, then I don't see how these regulations will help. In fact, they will hurt consumers. I hope you will reconsider the regulations and find a way to protect agents from being put out of business.
