I think this has the potential to be a great program. The health issues listed of course highlight lead as a major problem (which it is). One thing that disturbs me is that one of the major health problems associated with housing (or any structure) seems to have been completely ignored......that being Radon gas.
According to figures and projections from the EPA Radon will account for, or be the major contributor to over 21,000 deaths this year from lung cancer. How could such an iniitive like SHHIP ignore this health problem ??
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind cigarettes. Radon kills more people each year than drunk driving, and many more people than housefires, household accidents, and certainly lead poisining.
Radon gas testing, radon gas resistant new construction techniques, and radon mitigation (if needed) should be a major part of this program, and cannot be ignored.
