As a union member I would like to speak to this proposal. In past contract
negotiations the company wanted random drug and alcohol testing for selected
individuals. I opposed this. I would support testing for all individuals onsite
including contractors, office workers who must move about the site for inventory of
raw materials, control room operators, vendors, or anyone who moves about in an
area where their drug or alcohol use could present a danger to themselves or
others. I work in a cement manufacturing facility. Any intoxicated person on site
can present a danger. Beware of being selective. I'm certainly not a legal genius
but if your selections are not fair and equitable you can expect lawsuits from union
members, especially if a death or injury occurs from a group or individual you feel
should be excempt from testing.
