I am a civilian professor in the Department of Defence Studies at the Royal Military
College of Canada and Canadian Forces College in Toronto. I regularly use the
NARA College Park reading room during evening hours and on Saturdays during
research trips once or twice per year. I customarily spend a week to ten days at
NARA College Park during these research trips. The shorter hours will limit my
productivity and entail greater expense in terms of accommodation for a longer
stay. Can some consideration be given to making the hours at NARA Downtown 9-
5 and keeping at least Saturday and perhaps one or two evenings open at the
NARA College Park reading room. I understand the financial restraints involved,
but consider this curtailment of hours a serious limitation in terms of accessibility
to researchers and I also am concerned about the employees that will be thrown
out of work or reduced in hours to meet this change. At least some opportunity
should be made available for those researchers who cannot come to NARA during
normal business hours or like myself research for extended hours during a specific
period of time.
