I strongly feel the simpler label option should be pursued, NOT the letter grade option:
- Letter grades oversimplify: the difference between B and A could be miniscule, or quite large.
- Letter grades do not allow for progress as well as the number-based label. Presuming vehicles will keep improving, do we give NO vehicles today an "A" to leave upward room? Or, alternatively, 10 years from now do more and more vehicles get an "A"? Do we start giving out "A++" and "A+++"? Letter grades are not as flexible.
- The letter grade label sample is way to complicated-so many little charts and such, good grief! Put all that online for the people who really care deeply; they are looking it all up anyway.
- The number label follows in the footsteps of what we have been using for decades. Everyone can understand easily a mileage number and an annual cost number. "How This Vehicle Compares" and "Environment" are easy to understand.
Other comments:
- Smartphone and website: cute, but again those who care deeply will find all that online. A simpler and SMALLER sticker is better.
- The annual cost estimate should note in smaller type below how many annual miles it is based on.
- It is ridiculous to list electric vehicle statistics without including at least SOME estimate of upstream emissions from power plants. Yes, it varies depending on local power sources, but pick a number! "Zero" paints a false picture and unfairly penalizes near-zero gas/diesel engines and hybrids.
