I don't think it is a good idea at all for the U.S. government (NHTSA) to require "black boxes" in all light passenger vehicles and I certainly don't think it is good that if they are forced on us, that we will have no way to disconnect them, as this is an obvious invasion of privacy and should not be tolerated. Despite what NHTSA says about the EDR's only being activated "minutes before" an accident, and during an accident, that is incorrect, if they can be "activated" before an accident, then they can certainly be activated at any time and all information about a driver or passenger in the car can be collected and distributed to whomever or whatever entity wants the information. This is clearly an invasion of privacy and should not be enacted and foisted on the American public, or for that matter, say on any unsuspecting people from other countries who rent or borrow any vehicle made after Sept 1, 2014. Any data can be collected by these EDR's not just crash info, but conversations, both verbally and on cell phones, the tracking of the vehicles (where they go at any given time of day or night), how much a person in the car weighs, just all kinds of intrusive info that the government has no right to. If this goes into effect, the car manufacturers will be losing much business because there will be alot of people not opting for any more new cars, I for one, will keep driving my 1970 vehicle. This is a very bad idea and seems to me like my car would not be my own any more, it would be a government spy tool.
