The level of funding for animal agriculture is and has been serverly limited. Currently the proposal is for $700 million in funding for FY 2008-2012. The value of animal agriculture in the United States represents $150 billion according to data found at www.agcensus.usda.gov . This level of funding for research represents approximately 0.5% of the value of animal agriculture in the US. Numerous threats to animal agriculture and the health and wellbeing of the US population. Foreign animal diseases, emerging diseases and bioterrorism are just a few of these threats. Research funding in these areas needs to be more strongly emphasized and supported financially.
