The West coast swordfish fleet has been successful reducing the mammal interactions to next to zero as mandated by US law. We use accoustic pingers as well as other strategies that can be applied to other fisheries around the world. We have NMFS observers that monitor for mammal interactions. In order to conform to the rigid standards in the Marine Mammal Protection Act we have time and area closures. Other countries that ship swordfish to the US should have to maintain the same standards.
