I grew up commercial fishing in Cook Inlet. We used to see hundreds of whales swimming among our nets...now they're just gone. They have NOT recovered after shooting/wounding/hunting was stopped.
Oil and gas companies, the City of Anchorage and the primary-treated sewage it dumps into the Inlet every day...for too long the rules have been written to favor these groups.
Let's begin to recognize how special The Last Frontier is...to be able to still live among and see these amazing creatures with which we share this world. As a life-long Alaskan, we NEED this designated critical habitat and even more protections for these whales and the Inlet. We know that only a fraction of proposed projects or industries are ever meaningfully impacted by critical habitat designations...look at Kachemak Bay. Alaska's economy will survive
The belugas won't unless we act now. What kind of world do we wish to pass to our children and their children?
