The HSUS agrees that additional management is required to reduce pressure on these three species. As we have noted in our full comments (attached) we are concerned that some of the NMFS preferred alternatives are not sufficiently conservative. In particular, relying on a program to “promote” release of makos (a voluntary action) is akin to taking no action at all. This is especially true when the NMFS is at the same time permitting big money shark tournaments designed to target them.
We urge the agency to be more proactive in conserving shark species that are subject to heavy fishing pressure both domestically and in foreign fisheries.
We look forward to the NMFS taking decisive action to recover shark populations, not only those that are the subject of this Amendment proposal but other species as well
