Dear NMFS,
I have been a recreational fisherman for 42 years out of York harbor. I do not support the "Gulf of Maine (GOM) Cod Spawning Protection Area". Since colonial days cod have been coming from offshore to be in this area and it is the only chance for small boat recreational fishermen to have access to decent cod fishing. The science does not support this with cod stocks increasing and even considered rebuilt because of the current restriction and sacrifices made by all fishermen. This is a feel good measure only that is not supported by the average recreational fisherman. The boundaries proposed is crazy based on Loran lines. Not sure if the NMFS got the notice from the CG that LORAN is no longer working. There will be no way to know where the bounday is and unless there is a federal requirement for recreational fishermen to buy GPS units this will be unenforcable. How will a fisherman know where this area is if the only knowledge of navigation is to use land marks and all they have is a compass? Is the NMFS going to place markers every 15' so in the fog people wil know where the area is? I am agains this 100% as are the people I fish with.
