The Humane Society of the United States supports the listing of four subspecies of ringed seal (Phoca hispida) as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). But we also request that the National Marine Fisheries Service reconsider its lack of concern for the impacts of native subsistence hunting as well as the growing threat posed by ocean acidification that is having a particularly strong affect on the Arctic and is likely to have detrimental effects on many of the seals’ prey species.
