Marine Mammals: Alaska Harbor Seal Habitats

View Comment

I would be in favor of not letting cruise ships and other commercial tourism vessels approach any closer than 1/4 nautical mile of harbor seals on the ice. This would allow more protection for the pupping harbor seals. Chosing a 1/4 nautical mile distance would be easy to implement and enforce by using a vessels radar. Thank you for the opportunity to comment. As an aside, to aviod harassment, commercial tourism vessels should not be allowed to come within a 1/4 nautical mile of humpback whales or sea lion rookeries as well. Bruce White
