Endangered and Threatened Wildlife: Petition to List Sperm Whales in the Gulf of Mexico as a Distinct Population Segment

The HSUS believes that there is evidence, both presented by the petitioners and in additional published literature, that supports the designation of sperm whales in the Northern Gulf of Mexico as a DPS. However, we do not believe that there is evidence to support listing sperm whales in this area or sperm whales in any other portions of the species’ global range as anything other than " endangered" under the ESA.
