During the past year, Yellowstone's managers have repeatedly assured us they will enhance improvements in the winter health of our first national park by requiring snowmobiles and snowcoaches to meet even more-stringent noise and emission standards.
Superintendent Dan Wenk calls these requirements "the foundation" of his plan for a "cleaner and quieter" Yellowstone.
But now a proposed rule asks the public — and pointedly asks the snowmobile industry — whether the very provisions Wenk has touted should be dropped, delayed or not required of all snowmobiles.
I STRONGLY urge the National Park Service not to go back on assurances it gave or abandon protections it determined Yellowstone needs.
