Re-establishing the Sanctuary Nomination Process

View Comment

Sanctuaries need permanence is order to be effective. Here in Virginia, we are employing a Biogenic approach to 3D substrate that cannot be removed or altered. Additionally, we require a minimum of three years monitoring and reporting the status of the project. In a nutshell----- The proposed area must be armored with a enhanced naturally occurring accretion such as calcium carbonate to ensure long term goals can be reached. Require a monitoring protocol for a minimum of three years. Sanctuaries require dedication in the first years of growth therefore a group monitoring the area will be on top of biological development. Upland resources must also be a consideration.Localized water quality must be maintained. It would be pointless to create a sanctuary where later the water standards become less than when the site was chosen. Finally, a sound educational program must be in place per site. No sanctuary will be same as the next so a publication must be available informing all parties the purpose and benefits of sanctuaries.
