I am commenting on the use of snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park. I remember about 10 or so years ago that the reason for removing snowmobile use in YNP was the fact that the bison were using the groomed roads to travel outside the park into states that have brucellosis free status. Also topping this argument was the fact that snowmobiles where causing clean air and noise pollution issues. So the snowmobile manufactures have produced much cleaner and quiter snowmobiles (less then cars). Compared to the older snowcoaches that are still being used in the park that are louder and pollute more, nothing has been stated about these vehicles continued use in the park???? The roads are still being groomed and the bison are continuing to leave the park in the winter to go to slaughter. Isn't this the real issue? The groomed roads and the killing of the wild American Bison. If it isn't then it should be! If air and noise quality is the issue then I think ALL vehicle use in the park needs to meet the standard, not just the snowmobiles. Ban the older snowcoaches! I agree with reducing the daily number of snowmobiles, but I do not agree with the rule that you must be accompanied by a guide. It is impossible for an individual to access the interior of the park to enjoy two or three days in the backcountry skiing or enjoying other nonmotorized recreation, without staying in lodging, paying for a guide or traveling by a pollution puking snowcoach that has an extremely limited schedule. I think it should also be managed for private individual snowmobile use, if you have a snowmobile that meets the emissions and noise standards and you have been guided through the park at least once in the past you should be able to access the park, maybe use a reservation and fee system. So in closing; 1. Stop grooming the roads which equals no motorized use. 2. Ban the use of older polluting snowcoaches. 3. Let private individuals access on snowmobile, a reservation and fee system.
