There are many inaccurate statements in this comment, the reason for building a new shared hike and bike trail is this is what was decided after the NPS worked with a backcountry trails committee made up of all user groups. There were 5 options and a comment period before the park decided which would be best for the park and all the user groups. Sal Hollow is the only singletrack trail in the park and it will be closed to bikes at the end of August, 2011 and reopened to horses. At this time there will be no singletrack trails for bikes until Big Hollow is built and opened. There will be 70+ miles of trails open to horses. Also, saying bikes can ride the roads is like asking the horses to ride only in arenas, its two totally different activities. Mountain biking is something I enjoy doing with my 2 teenage sons (I’m not that good at X-Box)
As far as the park not maintaining the trails I’m sure it’s for lack of money, manpower and priorities. Sal Hollow is currently the best trail in the park because the local bike clubs and cyclist who do most all the maintenance and have volunteered over 200 hours per year the last several years. There is a small group of horse folks who help maintain the other trails but there are more miles of trails open to them and horses are harder on the trails.
