I am a frequent user of this trail system, both as a pedestrian (hiker and runner) and as a cyclist. I strongly support the opening of additional portions of the trail to cycling usage. There are two main reasons that I think this is needed: - Currently, all bicycle traffic is restricted to one main road/trail through the park; this is also the portion of the trail system that receives the most pedestrian traffic. This forces cyclists and pedestrians to use the main trail as an "out and back" route, thereby quadrupling the interactions between bikes and pedestrians. Permitting the use of other trails to form loops would dissipate traffic throughout the system, reducing the interactions between bicycles and pedestrians by more than 75%, especially during busy periods (weekend mornings). - Keeping all bicycle traffic on the main trail also accelerates erosion, again in the areas of most frequent usage. By opening the side trails, bike traffic will be dissipated and erosion will be better controlled.
