Meetings: Distracted Driving Summit

View Comment

Dear Mr. Ray LaHood ----- My name is Lori Dean, I work for Jotto Desk in Rogers, Arkansas. We design and manufacture vehicle mounting products for laptops & equipment consoles for mobile professionals including many in public safety. The goal of all of our product lines is to provide a safer driving environment for people who have to use technology in their vehicles as part of their job including, Police, Fire, EMS, Government, Construction, Service Technicians & many more types of employment. ----- For optimum safe driving environments, we recommend that our customers "Park & Work" and "Store & Drive." We also offer a software product called ScreenSafe that goes a step further to eliminate temptation to use the laptop while driving by blacking out the laptop monitor when the vehicle is moving as detected by a GPS antenna. Once the driver has safely stopped, full laptop functionality resumes. ----- We are pleased that you & President Obama's administration see the need to address the technological driver distractions that exist in addition to cell phones. Let's not waste time agreeing with each other that it's dangerous to text with your cell phone or check your email on your laptop while maneuvering through rush hour. Let's spend time looking to the future of prevention such as safe driving software like ScreenSafe for laptops & others also hitting the market for cell phones. We need practical solutions & laws that are enforceable by even the smallest of law enforcement departments around the country. ----- One DOT Summit focus is to discuss a nationwide ban on using electronic devices while driving. While banning texting, calling, dialing, emailing, Google-ing and working on your cell phone or laptop will raise public awareness, unfortunately it will take time & resources to convince everyone on the road that they should just focus on driving. It's a start though. Thank you again for making reducing distracted driving a Department of Transportation priority.
