I encourage the USDOT to focus on the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians to enhance the safety, economic competitiveness, and environmental sustainability (by reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and lessening our dependence upon foreign fossil fuels) within our communities.
Bicycling and walking is crucial to promoting increased access to jobs, school, health services, and other activities, while improving the quality of life of residents--by promoting active lifestyles and reducing health-care costs.
I encourage officials to seek greater ways to ensure safety of bicyclists, especially here in our state of South Carolina where we're ranked 5th in the nation for cycling fatalities.
Maintenance is a key as bike lanes and/or shoulders should be kept free of broken glass, sand, yard waste, and other debris.
Thankyou for the opportunity to provide input.
