I am relieved that the federal government, specifically SSA, is taking this large step toward empowering its Attorney Advisor Program. Many AAs are of the mindset that their job is not as valuable as other positions within ODAR, given that it is also performed by paralegals and that there are times when our advice to the ALJs regarding a particular case is not heeded. With our legal training and expertise, our ability to review a case and make a decision based on our knowledge of the law would not be a difficult task or a stretch for us. Often, we spend more time reviewing the file and analyzing the record than the ALJs. I enjoy writing decisions, it is fullfilling; but this greater responsibility would enhance my career with ODAR in a profound way. If this proposal goes through, even after the two year period, I am sure the Agency will find it beneficial to continue with the AA program in this manner to further reduced the backlog of hearing requests we are faced with now. AAs are clamoring for greater responsibility and more decision-making authority.
