I for one find the number useful. As a HR Director, I review SS numbers regularly. I have found on several occasions that the Area Number allows me an opportunity to determine in what state the number was issued. I then ask the applicant about that State. If they tell me that they've never been to that State, I then spend a little more time investigating the applicant. I understand that there may be logical reasons for eliminate the Area Number, but I wanted to express my opinion and ask that you reconsider this decision.
