Comment 3: Trout Springs Winery (DeBaker, Steve J.)

The idea that a vintage date to a bottle of wine, is important to most people who buy wine consistantly. To dilute the industry with year dates based only upon a country in my estimation would be a mistake. Consumers such as myself, who base some of the choice on a wine purchase is certanly based upon year date, and where the wine comes from...ie appellation of origin. It makes a huge difference if the wine is from an AVA specifically, or if it would just say American. If a specific AVA is stated, I know that the majority of those grapes that made that wine are in that bottle, as per current statutes. Quality, and truth in labeling are some of the last lines of defense in the industry which sets apart some of the deceptive labeling loopholes available. In my estimation, it would behoove the TTB to keep the standards as they are. As the old saying goes, "Keep it simple", may prove to be the best advice yet. Most people who are not avid wine drinkers, identify with AVAs. Most wine drinkers also identify with a year date. Let's not make more confusion to the general public than what is necessary.
