Comment 1: Huber's Orchard, Winery & Vineyard (Huber, Ted)

RE: The Establishment of the Indiana Uplands AVA As co-owner and head winemaker of Huber's Orchard, Winery, & Vineyards and 6th generation family member, I will share some of our family history in farming and grape growing in this region since our ancestors settled this property from Baden-Baden Germany. We have been growing grapes on our property since 1843 and the grapes and the wines from our vineyards are different than the rest of the Ohio River Valley. Our flavor profiles are unique and the chemistry from our grapes is quite different than other Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and other Indiana vineyards. This is a consistent result year in and year out and measureable outcome. As the unglaciated area comes down from the central part of Indiana into the Ohio River it is clearly different as you drive east and west and north and south through the Upland area. The Upland area has a characteristic of a rolling landscape as the rest of the region is flat and used primarily for corn and soybeans. Huber Winery chose not to use the “Ohio River Valley” on our labels to date because it carried the word Ohio on an Indiana wine which didn’t assist with the promotion of the brand and the estate bottled nature of the wines we produce. There would be no negative impact if the AVA name were changed from Ohio River Valley to the Indiana Uplands on anything related to the Huber brand due to this change.
