In nearly 4 decades of organic vineyard management one constant that I have held true is growing grapes and making wine is a long-term commitment. Frequently, the level of that commitment is directly proportional to the quality of the end product-the deeper the commitment the better the wine. Wine labels have lots of cues that subtly infer that level of commitment, particularly where the grapes are grown. Growing grapes on the slopes of Moon Mountain takes more commitment than most vineyards. The land is steep and rugged, the roads are rough, the soil is extremely rocky but the result is high quality, complex, singular wines. Wines that standout from those grown anywhere else. I know because I farm many of the vineyards in this region. I fully support the creation of the Moon Mountain AVA as a way recognize the tremendous commitment my clients and others have made to grow truly outstanding wines in this truly unique region. So on behalf of my winery clients Kamen Estate, Repris Winery, Hamel Family Wines, Liquid Sky Vineyards, Stone Edge Farm, Lookout Ridge Winery, Winery Sixteen 600, and vineyard owners Christian Borcher, Nat Simons, Moonridge Vineyards/Korbin Kameron wines, I urge the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Board to approve the establishment of the "Moon Mountain District of Sonoma County" American Viticultural Area.
