I am opposed to the closing of the Morses Line crossing. I cross often into Canada, because of my residence being in close proximity to the Canadian border. Yes, I will be able to use the Highgate Springs crossing, but the convenience of Morses Line is hard to resist. I completely understand the need to update the crossing, but feel that it would be cost effective to do it on a smaller scale rather than what has been proposed.
I believe that it is hard for anyone to understand how unique this border crossing is to the communities that it borders. The closing will effect the commerce between the two countries and the since of community. Yes, Canada is a foreign country but not to us that live in such close proximity. I shop in Canada often, as the distance is the same to St. Albans as it is to Bedford. I have been asked why I cross so often, and I have explained that I like the variety that I have in Canada and I can purchase merchandise that I cannot find in the US. Will I continue to go to Canada? Yes, but a part of me will grieve the loss of the Morses Line crossing that has been part of my life for 63 years.
The memories that are attached to that crossing are mine and I hope that for once, a decision can be made not on cost, but on the fact that what is will never be again.
