I am in full support of opening an entry port--remote, unmanned, unsecured and otherwise--across from Boquillas in Big Bend National Park. The unnecessary hardship visited upon the already poor people in Boquillas--and those in Paso Lajitas, on the western end of BBNP--was an unblinking proof of the utter disconnect between our nation’s capital and America’s far-flung reaches. To paraphrase BBNP park superintendent, William Wellman, a man not given to brash or ill-considered statements: the criminal activities of the Tex-Mex border will not be rowed across the river at this entry point, and it would take an idiot, indeed, to try such a thing. To quote myself (using Mr. Wellman’s observation as my starting point): only an elected idiot would consider something like the Boquillas crossing as a danger to the United States. Thank you for the opportunity to comment, and for finally addressing the terrible wrong inflicted upon the good people of Boquillas. Clay E. Ewing December 12, 2011
