Although it is an unfortunate possibility for those who regularly use the Jamieson Line, the data and logic presented in this proposed rule provide an adequate reason to close the Jamieson Line, New York Border Crossing. As it is one of New York’s least trafficked crossings and is apparently becoming even less frequently traveled (the volume dropped from 2008 to 2011 by 20.8% and will probably continue to drop now that Canada’s crossing has closed), it seems that the financial burden of keeping the crossing open is not worth the public benefit. Traveling extra 6 to 9 miles a day to the next border crossing seems even less significant when you add in the fact that the crossing is not used very often. The current condition of the crossing could pose a potential public risk if not updated, and the costs to do so ($7,087,000 in the first year alone)are extremely high in relation to the amount the crossing is used. Saving money in today’s economic situation is very important, and I applaud the CBP for taking steps to do so.
