The idea that there are not enough qualified American mariners to full fill vacant positions on US flag vessels makes no sense. Many mariners have had trouble finding work in the last few years and with the absence of these jobs it will only hurt the prospects of current mariners. It will also make new or potential mariners think twice before spending large amounts of money for education to gain entry into the maritime industry.. Allowing foreign STCW certificates to be recognized will not only make our ports vulnerable to terrorism it will lower the wages of the merchant marine..This is not good for America..
