I am writing to oppose the Port Ambrose Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) proposal. This project steers us in the wrong direction away from existing conservation, efficiency, and renewable energy technologies and instead puts our region and our coastal environment and communities at risk.
Most of the gas that would feed the new LNG industry would be obtained using dangerous fracking which wastes millions of gallons of freshwater daily, contaminates drinking water with radioactive and cancer-causing substances, and threatens the health of local communities.
The process of turning gas into LNG requires huge amounts of energy and produces a massive amount of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), creating a serious barrier to our attempts to combat climate change.
LNG is not conventional compressed natural gas. LNG has been compressed by being super chilled to -260 degrees and is extremely volatile. Having this off our coast puts our coastal areas and communities at risk.
The LNG terminal would discharge 3.5 million gallons of chemically treated seawater used for pipe tests, generate significant underwater noise pollution, and dredge up over 20 miles of seafloor.
Economically, LNG exports, according to government projections, will drive up costs of manufacturing and electricity.
Therefore, I strongly urge you to reject the Port Ambrose LNG proposal. This project poses an unacceptable risk to our residents, environment and economy and puts shore communities that were recently devastated by Hurricane Sandy in harm’s way.
