To Whom it Concerns,
I wish to express my wish that ACTA not be signed/adopted by the United States. ACTA is an extreme step backwards, and imposes draconian barriers on information for the sake of profit, and not even profit of those creating information.
In an age where freedom to share, communicate, and express one's self, ACTA exists to protect what was the status quo--trademarks and copyrights made to benefit license-holders, not creators.
As Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation said, "Instead of making the status quo our ideal, we should demand positive changes." Stagnation is death, and for the United States--or any country--to sign ACTA is pledging stagnation and blindness to a dynamic world. It will harm us in the long term, as well as harm our culture as well as others.
Please, do not sign this agreement. The United States was founded upon freedom of communication and an exchange of cultural ideas. Now that computers are available to many, it's easier than ever for people to share information and cultural works with each other. Our laws should allow and encourage them to do so. We stand to benefit from less enforcement of copyright and trademark laws—not more. ACTA is a step in the wrong direction.
Sincerely,
Alex Boerstler
